### His birth

Erno Rubik was born on the 13th of July 1944, in Budapest â€“ Hungary. He came from decent family background, where his father was a flight engineer, and his mother was a poetess. During one of his interviews, Erno spoke about his father being an inspiration for him.

### His education

Rubik did his specialization in sculpture from the Secondary School of Fine and Applied Arts, and later on went on to attend the Budapest University of Technology, where he eventually decided to assist the Architecture Faculty. Later, he went on to teach Interior Architecture and Design in the Hungarian Academy of Applied Arts.

### Invention of the cube

Rubik initially started by using wooden blocks and elastic bands to create the structure and to keep it together. He made holes in the wooden block added elastics, and that happened to be his first original prototype.

Eventually, Rubik introduced the model to his university students, and they happened to like it. So, he applied for a patent and started searching for a manufacturer. He found a small company that used to manufacture plastic chess pieces and gave them the contract.

After getting it licensed to Ideal Toys in the USA, they rebranded the puzzle from Magic cube to Rubik’s cube. It took over 6 years from going reach a significant amount of mass production, but they eventually made it to the top by winning several awards for Toy of the Year in the 1980s.
