Direct speech Rules:
- Direct speech describes when something is being repeated exactly as it was as usual in between a pair of inverted commas.
- Direct speech repeats the exact words the person used.
- In Direct speech, the message of the speaker is conveyed of his own actual words without any change.

The general rules for direct speech are
- Each news character’s speech starts on a new line.
- Each line of speech starts with a capital.
- The line of speech ends with a comma, exclamation mark, or question mark.
- A reporting clause is used at the end.
- A full stop goes after the reporting clause.
- Speech is opened with speech marks.
Direct speech Examples:
- She replied, “No, I haven’t seen him since lunchtime”.
- I asked, “Have you seen lee”.
- He said, “I arrived before you”.
- She said, “I have already left”.
2. Indirect speech :
- Indirect speech shares the same information as direct speech but instead of someone’s comments or speech by directly repeating them, it involves reporting or describing what was said.
- Indirect speech means expressing the content of statements, questions, or other utterances and without quoting them explicitly is known as Direct speech.
- In Indirect speech, the message of the speaker is conveyed in our own words.
General rules to change direct speech into indirect speech are firstly omit all inverted commas or quotation marks. End the sentence with a full stop. If the verb inside the inverted commas /quotations marks is in the present tense change it into the corresponding past tense.
Examples of Indirect speech:
- He said he had arrived before you.
- She said she had finished.
- Sita said that she lived in the city center.

Direct speech into Indirect speech Examples :
1. Direct speech: He said, “I am watching a movie”.
Indirect speech: He said that he was watching a movie.
2. Direct speech: She says, “I am playing Basketball”.
Indirect speech: She says that she is playing basketball.
3.Direct speech: My parents are very well.
Indirect speech: He said that his parents were very well.
4.Direct speech: I haven’t seen sita recently
Indirect speech: He said that he hadn’t seen sita recently
5. Direct speech: They said, “They have taken exercise”.
Indirect speech: They said that they had taken exercise.
6. Direct speech: He said, “I’m going to call Geetha”.
Indirect speech: He said he was going to call Geetha.
7. Direct speech: She said, “I can swim”.
Indirect speech: She said she could swim.
8. Direct speech: She said, “I’ll call you”.
